they usually need to get changed at 100k miles. at the same time get the water pump changed and a tune up - it does not add onto the labor and you might as well as long as they have the car apart anyway. It will probably cost $400-$500, but it's mostly for labor. Of course, the alternative is not so good.

i do a visual inspection when i change the oil. on any vehicle. or you can read the book that comes with the car and it will tell you. when i see it has worn or crack spots i change it. that way i do not have or sit around an worry about it.....
