I am born and raised in Chicago. It is a beautiful place. Yes there are some dumpy areas just like anywhere else. Downtown Chicago is great. We have several great museums, Art Institute, The museum of Science and Industry. We have the Shedd Aquarium. Navy Pier. We have 2 great zoos. Lots of different cultural neighborhoods. Lots to do and see. We have restaurants from 5 star to fast food. If you have never been here it is a great place to visit as well as live and raise kids.

Chicago used to be dumpy -- parts of it. But it hasn't been that way for the last 25 years or so -- and it just keeps getting better and better.
I don't know what you have heard -- but Chicago is wonderful. You will love it.
This is the best time of year too because the weather is so nice now. Comfortable days and nice cool nights. Great to stroll down Michigan Avenue or through Millineum Park. Both are must do's when you are there.
Check out a blues or comedy club. Check out any number of great restaurants. Shop till you drop. People-watch. Explore the beautiful architechture by land or water (The Chicago River tour is great).

Chicago is great. There's lots to do. Parks, museums, restaurants, shopping, sports, skyscrapers, etc. There are a bunch of neighborhoods with ethnic diversity. Some of the rough neighborhoods are dumpy but tourists hardly go there. Now is a good time to go since it's not too hot and not too cold.

It's the third largest city in the counry. What do you think? It's got absolutely wonderful parts and horribly dumpy parts. Have you ever been to ANY big city? If so, you should have some idea

Several times. I've been to museums, the Brookfield Zoo, Sears tower, tons of stuff. I've stayed in the Near North side and walking around to restaurants were no problem, and a short walk to Michigan Ave for great shopping.
I was only scared once when a couple very large guys came up and squirted some kind of goo on my husband's shoe, polished it, and demanded $20. That was near downtown.

Iam from Chicago and I think it is a nice place to visit.Downtown is the place to be and I agree much cleaner and safer then new york.If you like shopping you need to go to state street Michigan ave water tower mall for sure. There is a lot of great little neighborhoods but some are what we say where the undesirable are.So stick to downtown and tourist attractions like navy pier.

I lived there for a while. Lots to do. It's got its pitfalls, just like any big city, but overall, it's good. (Stay off the green line.)

Yes, it is nice. It's just a big city so have no delusions; but compared to NYC it's a lot cleaner, safter, cheaper, and just as fun!
