Everything worked fine on Friday, but today when I try to open my internet browser the window flashes at me and then my desktop appears again as if I never tried to open it. I get no page messages or anything.

You may have a shadow session running.
Right-click on your taskbar and choose TASK MANAGER.
Click on PROCESSES
See if there is a session already running (IEXPLORE.EXE, NETSCAPE.EXE, etc.) If so, End the process. Then close Task Manager and try again,

Do you have a pop up blocker? The reason I am asking what sounds like a silly question is, I had a commercial pop up blocker that one day decided to treat my web browser as an unwanted pop up. Try turning it off and then try to open your browser...if it opens its your P/U blocker....if not maybe run a virus scan?
