Perhaps that's just what the US government wants us to believe. It would justify not negotiating or talking. These leaders are not amenable to reason, therefore the US must skip that step and invade, bomb or use covert means to overthrow their regimes. If they are all crazy, how can they manage to hang on to power?

Kim Jong Il has had an unique childhood, no doubt affecting him somewhat. However, as he spends his time living the high life with swedish babes, I'd say he's quite sane. ;) Or, at least, sane enough.
Chavez and Ahmadinejad are not insane- what gave you that idea?

I think there's a danger to assuming they're all mentally unstable. It's one way to propagandize our enemy (or potential enemy) in order to dehumanize them.
I do have to call their intelligence into question, however. For Ahmadinejad to say outright that he doesn't "give a damn about United Nations resolutions" just gives the U.S. an excuse to circumvent the U.N. and build a separate coalition against them.
Same with Hugo Chavez, who saw fit to address the U.N. and call Bush "the devil". Oh, come on!
Saddam was stupid in defying U.N. resolutions for 12 years.
Having said all of that, Kim Jong-Il, on the other hand, is an absolute nutjob. He holds onto power with an iron fist (secured by the power-grabbing of his father, Kim Il-Sung). In Kim's state-controlled media, he apparently has had it "reported" that he shot a 36 on nine holes the first time he ever golfed.
And keep in mind that North Korea is a nation where it's illegal to NOT have a photo of Kim hanging in your home, and you can be hauled away to a "re-education camp" if you are saying ANYthing uncomplimentary about the government.

I know these guys are not all 'MADMEN'. That is the propaganda tool of the American government at it's best. Being a veteran of the cold war era, i was led to believe and trained to destroy anything and everything Soviet...I have yet to meet a Soviet or Russian who actually has a reason to hurt me!!!! These men are not afraid to stand up for what they believe is right for THEIR OWN COUNTRIES, and will not bend to American agression.

chavez does it by rigging elections, ahmadinejad does it by cultivating a cult of psychotic murdering followers who enforce his rule, kim jong does it by being the scariest craziest s.o.b. in his country and sadam did it by dropping his enemies into chipper/shredders.
