I live in the country, so I have well water. When I wash my clothes they turn yellow. Even when I use bleach in my whites , they still have tints of yellow. What is causing this? We have used a rust eliminator in our water softner , but stopped because we didn't really see a difference. When we first moved here, the water was really clear and clean and we had no problem washing our clothes. Even our shower stalls are having sediment and rust stains. What can I do to stop this? Do they make water filters for large family and livestock use? I mean to filter the water (take out rust, sediment, minerals). Also, we have to buy purified water (about 1-2 gallons for one day), because our water has an odor to it and tastes bad.

I have lived in an area where my whites chose what color they wanted to be on any wash day. We didn't drink the water but had to shower and wash clothes. The stuff smelled to high heavens and stained everything. I was lucky in one way.....neighbors shared information about what I needed to do. First, stop buying white clothing and bleach made the discoloration worse. Powered bleach does some better but not great. Our water was very alkaline and that's what caused the problem. I thought it was high in iron but found it has manganese that caused the staining. I found out on my own that using --- of all things --- lemon aide cool aid worked to clean my dishwasher, tub/shower and commode. It's the citrus acid that does it. Yes, they do make a commercial water filtering system that uses salt as a filter for human use. I don't believe your water will harm your animals because it's only natures minerals causing your problems. In my next home I purchased the system, Culligan, mentioned and it solved my problems with stains and smell.

Good Luck!

The coloring is caused by iron in the water - look in the laundry isle for products like "Iron-Out" that can be added directly to the wash load, to remove the yellowing. (These types of products can NOT be mixed with bleach) ... bleach won't help remove the yellowing because it's a corosive and will actually help the iron in the water rust faster, causing even more yellowy clothes.

quit peeing in the bed and on the clothes. Vinegar will soften the stain and allow the soap to remove the stain to a level you can accept.

You might start using clorox bleach for colored items(colored clothes) I think that would do the trick
