What was the level of education like you received from your midwife or hospital on 'what to do in an emergency’? Were you given adequate information on emergency care such as what to do if your baby is choking or stops breathing when you are at home? If you didn't receive any training do you think it would be a good idea to teach basic life support to new mums and dads and talk about the most common emergency situations?

Absolutely, excellent idea. When you come home your quite a wreck anyway with what could (and probably wouldn't) happen. We were given no training on how to deal with things like this and I would have loved to have been given some tips and maybe when the baby was a couple of months old (and things had calmed down a bit) be given the option to attend a mini first aid course for babies and children. Think it would help calm a lot of parents and be able to deal with things like possibly choking, small cuts and grazes without freaking out.

Yes this is a good idea... All parents should be exposed to this material or atleast given the option. Weather its while they are in the hospital after the birth or special classes offered in the office. Maybe working out a discount certificate with your local Red Cross would help parents become more interested in learning too.

I also read about a study they have done in New York where they make all new parents take a class about Shaken Baby Syndrome before they leave the hospital and then make them sign a paper saying they have seen the material and understand it. I bet this is something that should also be done everywhere.

My husband and I were required to take an infant CPR course before my baby was discharged from the NICU. The course included a modified Heimlich maneuver for babies, and CPR for babies and small children. They also discussed when it is recommended to call 911, and when it is recommended to take the child to the hospital.

It's information that I hope I never have to use, but it made me feel much more confident that I could handle basic emergencies if they happen.

The courses are usually available for a small fee to all parents who want to enroll, at most hospitals. It's a shame more parents don't enroll voluntarily, and I agree that hospitals should require it for the parents of all babies (not just NICU babies).

I think it would be wonderful to be taught the basics of what could happen once the baby is at home. So many new parents are scared once alone with a new baby and don't know what to do. It would be of great service if they were trained to handle any situation that could occur. Great idea
