Good question, there are three definitions. A thoughtful person is described under definition 3.

thought·ful (thôt'fəl)
adj.

1. Engrossed in thought; contemplative.
2. Exhibiting or characterized by careful thought: a thoughtful essay.
3. Having or showing heed for the well-being or happiness of others and a propensity for anticipating their needs or wishes.

It is most likely intended as a compliment, meaning that your actions seem to show that you think of others - that is, perhaps you give gifts to others on their birthday, or maybe you send flowers or good wishes in a greeting card if someone is ill, or gets married, or loses a loved one. Perhaps you just show that you are thinking of others' wishes and of the welfare and happiness of others by the way you live your life and the things you do and say everyday. Perhaps you think carefully before speaking about sensitive matters. All of these things, and this type of things, could be considered (or called) "thoughtful".
