Are Americans really this parochial?

2006-09-25 03:59:26 · answer #1 · answered by phoneypersona 5 · 0 0

Nope, only in the USA.

In England we could not give a crap when Chris got lost on route to India and found what is now the States and nobody else outside the USA does either (why would the Chinese celebrate the discovery of America?).

You may find this a surprise but American holidays such as independence day, thanksgiving and liberty day are not celebrated worldwide either (unless you count the whole of the USA as worldwide which so many Americans seem to)

I don't celebrate Columbus day. I never saw any Columbus day decorations anywhere and there are no songs so in reality, there is no celebration except maybe a parade.

Lief Eriksson, a viking, was here 500 years before Columbus but I don't celebrate that day either.

Columbus Day is celebrated in the US. Canada celebrates Thanksgiving on the same day as we celebrate Columbus Day in the US. Finally, Puerto Rico-Virgin Islands Friendship Day is celebrated in Virgin Islands on this day, relating to the Columbus Day.

Heck I don't even know if it's celebrated in all nations in North and South America...
You'd think that the era the # of continents went up like 40% would be somewhat important but no... people only care about their own continents, and that's if they've EVEN heard of Columbus.

Funny how Columbus died without knowing he discovered almost half the ******* world.

Oh, yeah. Native/indigenous North Americans LOVE the fact that Columbus "discovered" the New World. It's a party day with them.

Also, Austrailians really give a rat's a** that Columbus lived.

This reminds me of the classic "Do they have a 4th of July in England?"

Absolutely not. Only in the U.S. A . Alot of historians believe that it was actually the vikings that discovered North America. There has been reports that they were here first.
