It seems that everyone, including Dr's, say that the cure for this is potassium, but really, how many bananas do you think you would have to eat to get the full benefit of potassium? With research, I have found that it's not lack of potassium that causes this, it's actually lack of Magnesium. Our bodies do not store magnesium, and w/out it our muscles can't relax, and it can cause your nerves to be on edge. Hence, this is how we get high blood pressure, migraines, cramps, restless legs, anxiety...the list goes on. But at the same time, magnesium needs calcium to function prpoperly (and vice versa). So really without proper nutritional supplementation, you aren't receiving it. If you want to know where to find the best nutritional supplements, visit my website. Centrum and Puritan's Pride don't even compete...:)

There is a very simple exercise my chiropractor taught me years ago and it works - each night before bed, stand arms' length from the wall, palms flat against the wall. Bend your elbows so that your chin touches with the wall, keeping legs straight. (Sort of like doing standing push-ups.) You can feel the calve muscles stretch. Do this ten times each night and you should not suffer from Charlie horses any more.

My doctor told me to increase my potassium from foods like bananas. It helps prevent the charlie horses and leg cramps. And either this worked for me or they just went away, but it's worth a try. You can also get supplements that have extra potassium. Good luck!

I got bad cramps in my calves when I was preg. The best thing i foud to do was to just strech the muscle untill the cramp lets go. If you catch it at the begining it works quick. Even if it hurts though strech it will let go faster then if you just rub it. This works when i get cramps in my toes too. Strech, strech, strech!!
During the cramp. I don't know but it may help to strech during the day too. Oh!! and drink plenty of water dehydration(sp) can cause cramping.
I forgot ab potassium. That in addition to what i said is good advice. Good luck!

a charlie-horse is like a bruise on a muscle or a cramp. you could eat a banana everyday to help reduce the pain, but it isn't an immediate effect. they contain potassium, which muscles use to expand and contract. additional potassium will benefit the fluid motions of your muscles as they expand and contract and aid in returning the muscle to its original state while limiting the folds and knots that cause the pain of a cramp or charlie-horse.

I understand that a potassium deficiency is at least partially responsible for that kind of muscle cramp. Bananas are a good source of potassium. Try that, for prevention.
Once you have one, though, the only thing I know of to do is to stand and walk on it immediately. That breaks the cramp.
