I have a lot of trees around my house and there are always spiders everywhere. It will be getting colder here in the UK soon so the frost should kill a lot of them but I was wondering what they really hate and if there is anything I could spray around the windows etc? If you have any tips I would be HUGELY grateful! I am absolutely terrified of them.

They hate the smell of Horse Chestnut and Cloves. You can buy it in a spray, I got mine from one of those little mail order catalogues that fall out of magazines. Or you could probably make your own by getting Horse Chestnut extract off the internet and mixing it with water.Spray it round the windows and doors every 2 or 3 weeks and they won't come in. Definitely works though. Even tried it when we went camping and we didn't have a single spider in the tent.

It is not harmful to spiders at all, and the smell wears off to humans after a few minutes.

Spiders hate the smell of Chestnuts so you should plant a Chestnut tree if you have space in your garden. Every Spetember I collect lots of Chestnuts and put them in bowls, like pot pourri. They look nice when they are fresh and shiny. When tehy dry out a bit I hide them in corners. It must work as I have had less spiders in my house since I've started doing this.

Betterware sell a spider repellant spray - I've just ordered some but it hasnt arrived yet so I cant tell you if it works. Think it's got essence of chestnut and clove in it.

Hope this helps.

There is a large fruit like item that you can find here in Ohio called "monkey balls" - but also known as Osage Oranges. You put them in the basement in a plastic bowl and they drive spiders out of your basement and house! You have to pitch them come spring, but they are very effective.

I have not heard of any smells that the spider is objectionable to.. I would try, however, borax(powdered) if you can find some there in the UK.. They do not like that stuff

According to this site, spiders seldom show any sign that they are able to detect airborn odors- and the osage orange and chestnut suggestions are myths:

i dont know of anything, but if you find one,use the hoover. they cant come back out. and its better than stomping on one. plus i am sooo terrified of them, i cant even stomp on them, i can just bout hoover them up. trust me. its the only solution so far i have come up with. unless you have a byfriend with you AT ALL TIMES, which will result in you questioning your sanity, so i would just stick with the hoover. gudluck. **)
