To maintain order over the masses. The implant the notion of judgement from an early age for the purposes of control and in some cases deceit. God is a good money maker. Think of what religion does for poverty. It also does alot for those who put themselves in charge of his "house"

People believe in a higher power because they long for purpose. They want their life to mean something. To be part of a bigger picture. A god does that for them. I gives them hope when normally there would not be.
Others use the power of positive thinking. Imagine your dream job, dream partner, dream home....set goals and work toward it. Eventually you can get get it.
Whether you pray or repeat positve thoughts doesn't seem to matter too much. People have amazing results with both.
I won't get into my own thoughts on religion. I've read the Old Testament, New Testament, Book of Mormon, and the Quran. I've also looked into some Gnostic gospels that were not included in the bible. I'm working on learning more about Buddhism and other Eastern religions.
Overall, when you cut the extremism (on both the left and right sides), and different little customs out of it all....every one of them boils down to this amazingly simple law:
Love your neighbor.
Whether you believe in a god, the God, Allah or whomever or whatever you choose...follow this law. If there is a higher power, you will be rewarded. If there is not, you've made the world a better place...either way, it's a win win for you.

Well, explain the fall of Adam and Eve then? It's their fault that we suffer death/sickness/misery/pain etc. etc. etc. They did live in a place that was perfect.... God has a plan, and sometimes people have to overcome the misery, and their is a way for each person to get through.... God gives crosses in different amounts to different people depending on how much He knows that person can handle.....
I wouldn't make statements like you just did... It makes you sound like you find yourself to be equal with God... It also makes you sound ignorant, and a person without Faith, Hope and Charity.... And it also makes you sound as if you feel sorry for yourself... When you feel like that, it makes it so much easier for the devil to take control of your life....
The world is what we (humans) have made it, God did give each of us a free will, and if He were to step in and take away the misery and all that, then he'd be taking away from the free will he gave us.... And considering the way people live their lives, well, we all deserve the misery... Make it your goal then, to turn your life around, be a good example, help people and not complain, pass love and good efforts to everyone around you.... then others will hopefully take notice, and begin to do it themselves, then ,maybe we can change the problem.... its never too late.... and you don't have to help save everyone, because not everyone will want to take what you offer, but maybe one person will... And one soul for God is better than none.

of course there is a a GOD... how could you say such thing as not!
look around you... everything from nature to space to the earth to your own body... all created by GOD...
the main 3 religions & holy books, along with the spiritual answers... all from the almighty lord...
the misery around is because of humans... & could be considered as a test to see the strength of faith in the lord himself... the less the faith, the more the misery!
don't disbelief just because one matter... cause there are alot more matters to make a person a believer! :)

Read the bible, that way you can tell if there is a God or not.It is obvious that you know about Jesus Christ, if not then you should know that He is the son of God born by Mary.God made Him human to illustrate to people that even His son went through miserable times on earth, but never did He pour scorn on His father.
God is love. Look at a child and see how innocent his life is.A child bears no grudge on anyone;easily forgives even those who mistreat him; smiles at everyone as he knows no enemies; in short he is so angelic in anything he does.
You should not mourn about misery because you are supposed to find your way out of this misery; only you and noone else can do that.God helps those who help themselves and not those who mourn.

God is a word for the ultimate creating source from which we come. In this society people need something to hold on to, and deep in most people's heart we know that our strenth comes from within, our spirt, our consiousness, knowing right from wrong. God, or the ultimate creating source is described in many different ways. It all depends on which doctrim you choose to except. But in your research, you will find that in all religions, unless it is self-serving, the truth is the same. And the truth is that we must attempt to live beyond our physical selves in order to be in contact with God. How do we do this...love. Love is the answer to making this a better world for all mankind. And when we love, we feel the presence of God in our mind and soul and this love is then reflected in our physical being...the way we look, the things we do, the things we say, how we treat people, etc. etc.

I have often questioned this myself. I grew up catholic and have preyed on the thought of atheism because the science proves against a god. I feel that there wouldnt be such unrest if there were a god, and with SO MUCH unrest in this world, dont you think a god would try and cease that unrest? I am thinking on changing religions to try and feel more comfortable in a religion with my beliefs (I will be removed from my family if I leave religion altogether). I think people believe in god because they need to feel a part of something. A lot of people want to feel secure and safe, and that they dont think about all of the torment going on in this world. It's their way of having security and if that makes them feel better, we can't take that away from them. I personally have trouble believing a god would let all of this happen, and that children die "because it's their time".

Why shouldn't there be misery?
There are two sides to everything... It is the basic premise of the numberline that they teach you about in first grade.
Everyone believes that God is some genii in a bottle that you rub his as*s and three wishes come out.
God is just... God is righteous and laws are not broken. His own laws canno't be undone just because human beings want to have their cake and eat it too.
There is an intelligence that created life on this planet and that intelligence is (obviously) just a bit smarter than you and your kind because for even asking this question... it shows that you are either young and inexperienced in life... or older and just haven't gotten the jist of it yet (which is sad for you.)
None of the bad in life should even be seen as bad. It is both opposing and copocetic rules of law that make up both scientific principal and natural progressive resulting effects of action, that connect and abide on molecualr and cellular levels to the very core of creation.
God did this, yes... But He also gave us this same intelligence and all of its counteractive ability, in that we are animals, made of flesh and spirit given the ability above all other things in creation... to reason.
If you don't have a brain, and all you want are magical unicorns and fairy dust and to destroy, and sin, and err and yet still not feel that you should be subject unto some sort of repercussion, some end result . You have no right to blame God for the fact that you made the choice to neglect and fail to cultivate the intelligence He gave you. If people break laws in life, they go to jail... Now their are idiots who blame that on the police. and hate them for it. (Is that you too?)
and then their are law abiding citizens who get run over, stabbed and killed by idiots likes these everyday. Now whose fault is that? God's fault? or the fact that society breaks down and fails itself, in that some idiot somewhere will ALWAYS feel that they are above some law and have the right to put others in harms way in contesting and challenging authority. Are you that idiot?
Every law must be upheld in order for life to exist. If God is always a Big bad wolf, Why can't science be at fault and faulty as well? Laws are laws... right? You never see atheists arguing the cracks and errors in science and or evolution when in fact their are billions of open ended arguments to the creation story of the big bang... Why is God always personified as a bully and a masochist for upholding laws and for cause and effect?
No one punishes you for anything... You do whatever you do, and the result happens naturally.
Grow up!

I choose to believe in God not b/c I was forced as a child but b/c there's so much to life and the beginning of everything is so mind boggling and unexplainable that there's not a lot of other choices. I honestly don't know about other religions, nor have I read the Bible, so I can't give a real intelligent reason....but it's just something that feels right after lots of inner conflict about it.

It is a built-in belief because that is where we came from. The rest of our lives are spent trying to sort out the truth from the bullshit we are fed by all of the people who don't know any more about him than we do.
As far as misery, that is a consequence of being created with the freedom to choose. There is a unique work being done on the human, and it is to create beings who can tell God jokes he hasn't heard yet. The ingredient of evil is part of how this is being done. Don't worry, it's all under control.

But I would argue that there must be a God because the whole universe and all the things in it can not have come about by chance.
He doesn't control what happens on Earth because people are free to do what they want, but I think there must be a designer behind the universe.
