Addiction is something that you are habitually or compulsively drawn to. Addiction is usually a bad thing, especially if you're addicted to something harmful like smoking, alcohol, or drugs. However, addiction CAN be a good thing, like if you're addicted to exercise -- there are people who "just don't feel right" if they don't go out and run or lift weights every day, and that type of addiction is actually beneficial. Addiction has a negative stigma because in many cases a person's addiction literally takes control of their lives and affects their ability to function. In many cases, addiction has ruined a person's life -- they either ended up in jail or lost their homes/families/money/job/whatever because of their all-consuming addiction...

Addiction is by its nature a bad thing. Sometimes we misuse the word.
You can say you are addicted to golf - but really its a habit you can take or leave without withdrawel symptoms. You wouldn't suffer physical withdrawels if you could not play golf for 5 days in Paris say because there are lots of other things to do to have a good time. Where as if you ask many people to go without booze for 5 days (even those who say they don't have a problem) would feel unable to enjoy themselves as much.

Addiction is when you keep doing something in spite of negative and repeated consequences. You know you are addicted when you need a substance, behavior or person so badly you will do things outside your own value system to get it.

Decades ago, addiction was a pharmacologic term that clearly referred to the use of a tolerance-inducing drug in sufficient quantity as to cause tolerance (the requirement that greater dosages of a given drug be used to produce an identical effect as time passes). With that definition, humans (and indeed all mammals) can become addicted to various drugs quickly. Almost at the same time, a lay definition of addiction developed. This definition referred to individuals who continued to use a given drug despite their own best interest. This latter definition is now thought of as a disease state by the medical community.
Physical dependence, abuse of, and withdrawal from drugs and other miscellaneous substances is outlined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV TR). Unfortunately, terminology has become quite complicated in the field. To wit, pharmacologists continue to speak of addiction from a physiologic standpoint (some call this a physical dependence); psychiatrists refer to the disease state as dependence; most other physicians refer to the disease as addiction. The field of psychiatry is now considering, as they move from DSM-IV to DSM-V, transitioning from "dependence" to "addiction" as terminology for the disease state.

Addiction means repetition, that you can't get enough of something and too much of anything is not a good thing.
