I think you just need to take tension off tranny by having it rocked back and forth, you'll need help for this

This is a "jugglers act" You can try "violently" rocking the steering wheel back and forth from side to side. It may be hung up in the steering coulumn lock ,(while pulling the shifter to get out of park). Also sometimes (if it is on fairly level ground, you may be able to rock car (foreward & backward) to release the "lock mechanism" inside the transmission...... do this with the engine turned off, - (you can start the car in neutral to drive it!) Don't use the parking brake - when you park (unless you actually HAVE TO) as it can get stuck, and prevent the pressure on the park mechanism in the transmission from releasing, - thus hanging the "lock" in the transmission from releasing.

If this doesn't work, you probably have a problem inside transmission. . I have a 81 ford pickup that had this happen long before I bought it! The "plunger" which slides on a small wire "rod" came off the rod, and then wouldn't pull back from the "locking finger" that was spring loaded, - and Slipped into a slot in the "crown wheel" (sort of like puting a wrench in a gear wheel). This would keep the transmission locked till you pulled the lever out of park. Well some (idiot) person took the little plunger out and threw it away. Result transmission works fine, but you have no park (have to use parking brake all the time).
At the time it probaly could have been fixed easily and cheaply by just "peening" the end of the rod so that the plunger stayed in place...... Now Ford does not stock the plunger as a replacement part (because the transmiossion is "obsolete"). and maybe it costs them a dollar to produce. So I have driven it the 6 years I have had it without park working!!

I imagine that the stick shift is on the side of the steering wheel. Some of these cars have a little trick where you have to jostle it a little bit either forward or backward. If that doesn't help you out, than the problem may very well be that there is no fluid in the transmission and so the gears get stuck. You'd better leave it alone until you have that checked out because if you're not careful, you could ruin the transmission.

LOTS OF LUCK

Gear linkage has proably got the shifter pin at bottom at linkage causing it to be stuck. If this is a floor transmission, you may need to re-seat the pin to give it clearance. Column shifter you might have problem with the link at end of tranny to the shift rod and need to change the pin
