You can't be expected to take anyone seriously on this issue. They have been warning of the dangers of smoking cigarettes for decades and decades. There should be a law against lawsuits against tobacco companies.

How can you take whom seriously? The tobacco company or the smoker?
Irrespective of who you are talking about, these are sad situations where somebody, usually poor or penniless has a life-threatening condition and suing the tobacco company is the only way to get health care (other than through Medicaid).

You can't.
For well over a century, smoking has been recognized as being bad for your health. Of course the tobacco companies weren't going to say that, and expecting them to say it shows a remarkable level of obtuseness.
And even though it was only some 40 years ago the US Surgeon General announced it harmful to one's health, cigarettes had been known as 'coffin (coughin') nails' since before WW1. President Grant blamed his failing health on his cigar smoking.
No, there is nobody out there with anybody but themselves to blame.

There are any number of reasons. Tobacco companies have known (and suppressed) research findings regarding the truth about the effects (and addicted qualities) of their product on the body. They spent millions of dollars on very sophisticated marketing that has served to encourage society to smoke in the first place. These techniques were targeted to the very young--so they really are very much responsible for creating an environment that would cause a young person to become addicted in the first place. I clearly see tobacco companies responsibilites in this.

What do you mean? Take them seriously about what?
I don't take anyone who sues a cigarrette company for giving them cancer or Mcdonalds for making them fat. There have been warnings about these things forever and people need to learn how to take responsibility for their own actions. Pretty soon alcoholics will be suing beer companies for making them drink, when will it end?

You can't. But you can be sure that if something goes wrong in their life they will be looking for someone to blame it on. The cigarette companys have been telling people on the cigarette pack that it is harmful to their health. The government has stated that cigarette smoking is harmful to your health. I think people who sue a cigarette company for illness are asinine. Because unless they have been living under a rock for years, then they know the effects that cigarette smoking can cause.
But my feelings on this are the same for alcohol, drug abuse etc.

People are greedy and sue over the most obvious reasons. Some conveniently forget common sense when money is involved, claiming they were too stupid to know any better.
I think there should be a law that makes people have common sense.

Since there is now a hundred billion dollar class action suit saying that Altria came out with light cigarettes to cons smokers into thinking they were safe it is easy to believe them. After they split that judgement they will be even easier to believe.
