Please - only clean, wholesome suggestions. I'd like to have a meal either as part of the night or before the festivities. We'll have about 4 hours in total to work with.

Here you go, babe. I have attended several murder mystery dinners, superior fun, every one brought something to contribute to the meal, dressed in costume, assumed out character's personality for the duration. What a hoot!

I once had a party with 15 close friends that was a murder mystery. They were all asked to come with a character and background in mind and they could speak to each other to make little side stories and plots between them. I mailed one invitation with a red dot on the back and the person was the murderer.

The party started with a dinner party. At dinner everyone was given a gift. The gift was some kind of random weapon, like candle sticks or a wrench (think Clue). After desert the party was moved to the sitting room and the lights were turned out. While the lights were out someone was murdered (the murder just whispered in their ear to play dead).

The lights came back on, the "body" was discovered and everyone convened in the livingroom in front of a fire for coffee and to figure out "who done it."

It was so fun! People still talk about that party and it was almost 10 years ago!

you could have a mystery dinner with a funny menu -- such as
They could order like
shovel (spoon) -- but they don't know it is a spoon)
scaredy-cat (chicken)
hay pitcher (fork)
wiggle pond (jell0)
haystack (lettuce)
brown swamp sauce (chocolate pudding)

Here is a sample menu from a 4H club -- they went with a cowboy theme.
1. Buffalo Chips - Brownies
2. Moon Shine - Lemon Aid
3. Fools Gold - Corn Casserole
4. Prairie Dogs - Little Smokies (little sausages)
5. Mississippi - Root Beer
6. Horse Shoes - Crescent Rolls
7. Wagon Wheel Mud - Ice Tea
8. Tumble Weed - Cole Slaw
9. Squished Cowboy - Sloppy Joe
10. **** Cropping - Fruit Salad

Silver ware;

* Ursa Major - Spoon
* Hichcock's prop star - knife
* American Gothic - fork

Anyway, they get to order maybe 5 or 6 items -- maybe they get a pudding but no spoon, or they might get a spoon but they are eating lettuce, or they could get food and no utensils.
It is a funny night, and a lot of fun. It fits ages 10 thru 80 very well.
