I need to know because I have children and pets who play outside sometimes. Also, there is a black racer that hangs out in a particular area of our yard.

My husband has disposed of a rattle snake and copperhead and a water moccasin in the last year. If the racer takes care of rattlers we will leave him alone.

the main thing to know is that the black racer won't harm anyone, it is non-venomous, and it will eat rats and mice (that may carry disease). you should let the black racer live. he won't eat any other snakes but he may also be an indigo who would eat other snakes and is also not dangerous to us.

you should also educate your children on what to do around these snakes like stay clear. Most rattle snake victims have been bitten in the hand or arm. these snakes don't climb so the people who are bitten are likely to have been playing with or bothering the snake. or trying to kill it with a shovel or something like that. they won't just chase after you and bite you, you generally have to be asking for it for a snake to give you a venomous bite. they would much rather use the venom to catch food.

The black racer will predate on young snakes of all sorts and is canibalistic to it's own young.
