Did you use the Volume Control program to unmute and set the recording volume level?
Click the Start button and its somewhere around the Programs|Accessories menu.
When you run that program, you have to click the Options menu item, and then select Properties, in order to get to the Recording volume settings. There might also be a 'mic boost' button beside the recording volume control that you can enable.
Other than that, you can try using one of those amplified microphones that use a battery. I think they're call Electret types. Try Radio Shack, or The Source if you live in Canada.

Recording your own voice: You can use Sound Recorder (a Windows utility). To find it, click Start, All Programs, Accessories, Entertainment, Sound Recorder.
When you open Sound Recorder, you will find a button on the bottom right with a red circle on it. Click it and start talking. When you finish, click the button with the black square (next to the red circle).
Next, click File, Save As. Give the file a name and select the folder where you want to store it. Under Save as Type, use sounds (*.wav).
To play the file, double-click it. You should have a player program associated with the wav files. If not, right-click the file and select Open With. If Windows Media Player is not listed, click Browse. Find Program Files and double-click the Windows Media Player folder. Click wmplayer.exe and Open.
Unfortunately, Sound Recorder only creates one minute files. It can be tricked into recording more, but it is not worth the effort. If you need a file longer than one minute, use Audacity, which is free. You will find it at: http://www.audacity.sourceforge.net/
Download and open Audacity. On the toolbar, click the drop-down box and select microphone. Click the round red button and start talking. When you finish, click the yellow square button. Then click File, Export as Wave. That is a *.wav file, and you listen to it just as you would a Sound Recorder file.
