I found these pictures of this beautiful dress (see links below) and I really want to make it, I have bought the Simplicity 9891 pattern but I have one big problem: I don't know how to sew in the gold trim on the neckline and sleeves (click on the links and you'll see what they look like). Can anyone give me some instruction on how to sew them?

First thing you'll probably have to do if it is an actual collar (Can't see it all too well.) read the pattern itself and then the instructions.

Some collars require fusable interfacing, which is an iron on liner for the collar to adhere to the fabric better and not be so thin? Like I said, I don't know because I can't really see it well enough.

If it is not an actual collar (as opposed to just something you lay flat to an already sewn surface as a decoration, then just wait to stitch the pieces together (Back and front of garment) because it is always easier to sew things flat, when they are attached to their back sides and doubled, things can get tricky manuevering them without stitching them together by accident)

Then just attach it with a thin basting stitch close to the edges so that it doesn't make too much of a seam. You might want to apply tailor tacks (Instructions at the link I gave you below) if the pattern calls for them to keep it in alignment to the actual neckline of the garment.

You use a light basting stitch to keep it from sticking out too much from the body of the dress. It will be closer to the edge and have a more finished look.

As for the armband. Looks like the easiest thing to do with that would be to sew it together after measuring it to your arm and just tack it down later like an armband? If it is actually on the dress itself... I suggest sewing it on before closing the sleeve. It is easier then doing it after it is enclosed. But again... the pattern should say.

Like I said, the pattern should have all of the instructions you need either right on the pattern itself, or in the instruction book/pages that comes with it. You always have to read the pattern pieces and the instructions unless you have been sewing for years and can visualize it in your head from common sense. Which is harder than one might imagine...

It does look to me that it is flat to the body of the dress therefore like I said, just use a basting stitch close to the edge so that it doesn't leave a huge margin on your edges sticking out unstiched. Use a thin stitch setting on your machine for lines that are neater and more invisible to the eye.

Good luck... It is a pretty costume.

it looks like you would sew them on top of the material of the dress., lining up the hemmed (outer edges) i have made similar dresses doing that and it works out perfectly. you may want to check on the neck, cleavage edge to make sure that it covers high enough , you can always bring up the gold braiding up and past the outer edge of the material if you need more coverage. depending on the gold material i would probally hand sew it on altho going slowly with a machine would probally work too. cute dress , good luck.

make sure your trimming won't fray on the sides, sew a small hem if necessary. then get a matching thread and just top sew. easiest way i can see to do it.

i suggest that you go to a sewing store that just sells sewing and their accesories and ask them if they could give you advice.
