For real, if you let him know you have faith in him it could help, so long as you are being honest that is. Otherwise confidence comes from within, and derives from the acceptance of our abilities, rather than comparing them to the accomplishments of others.
If that doesn't work...Tease him, flick him with towels, and laugh whenever he makes a suggestion. Then when he's about to go Postal, you throw a roast for him with everybody he knows.

just be an encouraging friend, however, if he continues the lack of faith, distance yourself. you cant help someone who refuses to help themselves.
