I have gone ahead and changed my CV format and got a new proffesional photograph as well. are there any other tips which would be helpfull before applying for an internship at consulting firms. the website claims that they select just 1% of total applicants!!! what else can I do to make sure that my application stands out.

I've worked for consulting firms for the last 14 years, and would definitely get rid of the photograph - it will hurt your chances. Consulting firms deliver 2 things: smart people and specialized knowledge. Try to emphasize your knowledge in a way that the consulting company could picture you working for them on specific projects. This is definitely not an area where you want to make yourself broad, or say "I'll try anything". Also as a consultant you may have multiple client engagements at the same time, so it would help to show on your resume how you got organized to manage multiple competing priorities
