The best way to partition a hard drive is to use a disk called the altimate boot cd write your drive t zeros. After you do that Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive, or insert the first Windows XP Setup disk into the floppy disk drive, and then restart the computer. All the existing partitions and the unpartitioned spaces are listed for each physical hard disk. Use the ARROW keys to select the partition or the unpartitioned space where you want to create a new partition. Press D to delete an existing partition, or press C to create a new partition by using unpartitioned space. If you press D to delete an existing partition, you must then press L (or press ENTER, and then press L if it is the System partition) to confirm that you want to delete the partition. Repeat this step for each of the existing partitions that you want to use for the new partition. When all the partitions are deleted, select the remaining unpartitioned space, and then press C to create the new partition.
The thing with windows is that it's greedy so you haft to give minimal spce so i would take you hard divide it in 1/2 so if persay that you have an 80GIG give widows 20,000 for the operating system and keep the other 60,000 for yourself

You can create, delete, and format partitions within Windows - provided that you don't touch the Windows partition.
Try this:
1) Click Start and select 'Run...'
2) Type in compmgmt.msc and press Enter.
3) Maximize the window and double click 'Storage' in the list box.
4) Double click 'Disk Management(local)' in the list box.
5) You can right click one of the listed drives to modify it.
6) If you need help with what you see on the screen, click Help.
7) Remember that you cannot resize or move partitions without a commercial program like Partition Magic.

the simple way:
you first want to back up any data on your hard drive because once you delete and recreate partitions, the data in those partitions is lost.
right click on 'my computer' and select 'manage'.
the computer management window opens. click on disk management under 'storage'.
you'll be looking at all the drives and their content. find the drive you want to change the partitions in. if you have only one hard drive, you won't be able to do this as it will remove your operating system. first, you'll want to remove the current partitions. right click and choose the option to do that. once that is completed, you can move forward with creating a new partition by right clicking on the space. you'll choose how much space you'll want the new partition to be. follow the prompts to complete the partition creation.
after that's done, you'll need to format the new partition.
the following link explains in more technical detail about using the windows xp disk to perform these operations and asks some subjective questions prior to partitioning and formatting.

No, it does no longer. you may try reinstalling the working equipment. XP or Vista will test thepersistent for blunders purely before setting up. they'll "tag" the undesirable sectors so as that no tries are made to jot all the way down to them interior the destiny (consequently no longer producing blunders). that is approximately all you're able to do with out performing a low point format (which does no longer fix them ... purely hides them completely). FYI - low point formatting isn't for laptop beginners. you may very unquestionably render the HD completely unusable. regards, Philip T
