For AISI-SAE steel designations, the first two digits designate the type of steel and the last two digits designate the percentage of carbon in hundredths of a percent.

10XX = carbon steels

1018 = carbon steel with 0.18% carbon
1022 = carbon steel with 0.22% carbon
