My son is 8 months old and only uses his soother for his nap time. He is usually nursed to sleep, or is drowsy enough that he doesn't need the soother. It's not a big deal now, but sooner or later it will be, I'm not a fan of an older baby with a soother. When did you stop using it and how did you do it without totally scarring the baby ?

I meant to say that he usually nursed to sleep at bedtime. And I appreciate the positive answers people give, and don't appreciate how people like to judge and say not to give them one in the first place. Some babies need to suck, and I didn't want him to suck his thumb, so if that's the only thing that gives them peace, then so be it ! You do what makes your baby happy and I'll do what makes my baby happy. Please only answer the question, and Thanks to those who do.

Three of my children kept their soothers until they were approx. 2 yrs. old (they left them under the tree for Santa when it was time to give them up). They only used them for naps and at bedtime-when you are ready to wean him from nursing, the soother is a very useful tool. My fourth child never took to a pacifier and is resisting being weaned now.

You're actually lucky he uses a soother. My 3 year old son sucks his thumb. You can at least control when your son gets the soother. You can also make sure it's clean, (I can't always control when my son sucks his thumb). Don't worry too much. You will be able to get him to give it up eventually. When he's a little older, just keep telling him what a big boy he is and that big boys, daddy, uncle, etc. don't use one. Then set a date and just get rid of it. He won't like it but that's really the best way. Maybe you could also let him make the decision by providing another option. For example, do you want your soother or do you want X. His favorite food, perferably his favorite fruit, or maybe another reward. Do you want your soother or do you want to play X. The point is let him choose and then you be firm and don't let him have it that day.

I only gave my son his pacifier in the crib and he would use it to soothe himself to sleep. Eventually he would spit it out and I would take it so that when he woke up he wouldn't put it back in. This seemed to work because he would wake up and then fall asleep on his own. Eventually it just disappeared and he was able to go to sleep without it. He was about 1. I never had a problem with him using it, it just seemed like he was ready to be done with it. Now, my daughter sucks her thumb and I can't take that one away! Good Luck!

My son is 2.2 years old...Our dentist, and I have heard this from many other moms as well...

As long as they give it up by the time they are 5 years old, there is NO lasting effects of the pacifier.

I never used one with my daughter.
My advice to you is to get rid of it now, before your son is aware enough to demand it and make you feel awful for not giving in to his demands.
Best of luck to you,
Pam
