Why is it that in the media when referring to gay people they ALWAYS say for example "this new law is an outrage in the gay and lesbian community" why dont they just say the gay community? They both are that.

Joel is right, the term "gay" typically refers to the gay male community. I think it's out of PC-ness that people say "gay and lesbian" communities...they are, after all, quite different. It's funny though, that the male collective noun is used in just about every other area without a second thought...actors and actresses are all "actors", we say "hey you guys" when referring to a group of people, etc.

I agree with Gay and Lesbian community instead of just using Gay as a blanket for all but I don't get upset when Gay is used for all-too much else to worry about. Been a lesbian since I was 18-now 61 and have seen lots of changes folks.

i agree. I'm a lesbian but most of the time i just say I'm gay. The thing is it would be to easy and simple to just say "gay community" any way it's a more extensive way to label us all.

To many people gay is the homosexual male, while lesbians are homosexual females. To others, gay represents all homosexuals.

Kind of like when some people just say man or mankind to represent all humans. Others say men and women.

Whether gay or lesbian, the words stand for those who are homosexuals. Nothing to make a big deal of.

Popular belief that gays are men and lesbians are women. The media goes by popular belief, not by anything in between.

in a lot of circles, when one uses the word "gay" they usually are referring to men.
I don't care one way or the other if someone calls me gay or lesbian.

for the men the proper word is gay. fot the women, however, the proper word is lesbian but both words do mean the same.

here is an example:

if a man goes out with another man then he is gay.
if a woman goes out with another woman then she is a lesbian.

good luck.

In many circles I've had lesbians "inform" me that they aren't "gay" they are lesbians. I suppose it is an identity thing.

Whatever, to each their own.
