for example GNC; Sam's Club, Liberty Card; Entertainment card. I mean you pay the fee to save. I guess one does after they "break even".

Well, with my GNC card I stopped and about 1 year later, I guess to regain customer loyalty, I was offered to renew for free. Well that pays off.

I have a membership to Sam's Club. For me, I can say it does save me money because of the amount I buy and the savings of the items I buy.

It's not meant for the small family on a small budget. But if you can buy in bulk you can save alot. Plus I save alot on clothes. (I got off the fashion train long ago.)

But like anything else in this market, you have to do your research. Some items are higher at Sam's (sodas). Others are comparable or cheaper(computers, electronics). And some items are exceptionally well priced (books, jeans, bulk foods).

Also, gas prices at our local Sam's Club pumps were atleast $.06 cheaper than the next cheapest gas in a 60 mile radius.

Most of these discount cards are for the frequent user. But for the average Joe, most of these cards can't even hold their own.

It all depends on what you get with the card. I know for GNCs you get only 20% off...I don't feel that is worth the money, especially when I don't shop there because they are so darn expensive. But at clothing stores, etc. they may be worth it, as well as season passes to parks if they include get one free passes throughout the season they may be worth it. So it just depends on what is offered with the membership.

Form my own observation, the discount card plans only are effective if you purchase a large enough quantity of the products during the period of the cards' duration.

yes, but like you say you should calculate and decide if you would normally buy enough there to break even on one. They are designed to get you coming back and it is surprising how many people will spend extra travel time and money or even make unnecessary purchases to use their discount cards (because they want to get their "value" out of it).

When used judiciously, can help with savings, they pass some of their astronomical savings on to the consumer, at least it makes the customer think so.
