It's a pretty broad question but you could look at it in terms of women's sexuality. An example is the red room in Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. This was a place of punishment for Jane as she was often locked in this room by her aunt. The meaning of this can be seen as another example of the repression of women and children in the Victorian era as well as having overtones of the repression by the Catholic religion (red as in a cardinal's robes) and how many items in the church are red. The Victorian era was one of introverted values and that would definitely include sexuality. In fact at the time of its publication, Jane Eyre was seen as a book seething with sex (although sex is virtually non-existant in it) and many thought it had been written by a man.
