First look through magazines and clothing catalogues to see what you want. At least then you will have some idea of what you are looking for. There a several good on-line sites where you look at fashion and styles and see what sizes are available.
You should try and find out what size you are before setting off to a store. If you live in a repressive area you are going to have trouble just going into a store alone, you will need a female accomplice.
The thrift (secondhand) store suggestion is useful but then you'll never find anything up-to-date and new.
Shoes are not so difficult. There are plenty of large shoe stores where the supervision level is low.
I suggest you also explore the online options as well. You can also find guides to sizes on line as well as conversion tables.
Good luck
PS There is a device called a gaff, which is designed to hold your male equipment down. You can find these on-line. You can also find feminized lingerie for males on line, by which I mean panties that have enough space in the front to accommodate a man.

There are plenty of web sites that cover everything from make up instruction to dresses to unders to shoes. Some places have male to female size conversion charts. One site I found had a CD that helps you change your voice!! I buy lots of things on-line.
Indy T had the right idea, that's what I did in my begining. Just hold the item up to you for a rough fit then take it home and try it on. If it fits keep it, if it don't toss it or take it back. Clothes there are pretty cheap enough. The only "problem" I've found is when you shop regular stores as a guy you have to be prepared for a few strange looks from the clerks when you buy certain "girly" items!
Funny story! Early in my experience I bought a complete outfit at the thrift, to fit my "manly" body. I got heeled shoes, a dress, a slip, a heavily boned one piece body shaper, and a wig! When she asked me about the stuff I was getting I was shocked, I didn't expect her to ask!! I thought for few moments (which seemed like an eternity!) then told her I was in a play! lol!! I went back but because I was embarassed I checked to make sure she wasn't working the till. After a few puchases they all knew I was CDing but they treated me like a normal customer. They smiled, said hello, how was I doing, etc, etc. It was ok.
Today I prefer to "check out" with an older gal rather than the younger ones because they always seem to give me a "look" I don't care for. Enjoy, have fun!!

thrift stores in bigger cities sometimes cater to the trans population. boutiques may be some help also. as for the shoes when i first started looking for woman's shoes i went to pay-less and had no trouble with the customer service there.
if you want to try female clothes on at a store like walmart they will make you try it on in the mens section dressing rooms.
for bra sizing go to Victoria's secret they do not mind sizing people who might buy their product and didn't think any less of me
you will get looks and maybe even some bad comments. it don't matter where you shop for clothes, most people are close minded for the most part so just be ready for that.
this is all from personal experience. i am a transsexual and starting out was very hard. one hint is try not to dress in clothes that do not match your age. in other words a 38 year old shouldn't try to look like a teen. get age appropriate clothes

I think a thrift store is a good idea. If you want new clothes go to the men's fitting room and try the clothes on. What can they say, nothing or it would be discrimination. I used to work in retail and the most important thing we were taught and a sign was posted near our time clock was Rule #1 the customer is always right. Good Luck.

Most places, the people don't care enough about other people's lives and are more concerned about making a sale and keeping the customers happy so that there aren't complaints and they can keep their jobs. Just watch the area. A suburban walmart isn't going to be as friendly as some place like hot topic obviously. The first time I went shopping I went with my sister, not so that she could try things on for me, but for the support rather than going it alone.

Well, honestly you might want to try second hand and thrift stores, many stores won't let a guy try on womens clothing so you'd want to buy some from the thrift stores on the cheap to know what sizes you need. otherwise just save reciepts and return what doesn't fit.

When I put on a dress and stuff for last halloween, since my wife is a bit plump, I could use one of her dresses. But for shoes, I went to WalMart and scouted for a time when traffic was down. Remember, womens shoes are several sizes smaller than a mans so instead of 9s I was looking at 10 and 11. There are often boxes left out by customers when trying on, so get a box of regular mens shoes and when seated to try them on (lace ups give you time when you've got to put the laces in), then when no one is watching, slip the woman's shoe on for a fit.
Catalog sales are obviously the best choices for you. They've sizing charts and when you order by phone, how does the order taker know you aren't buying it for your wife or mother? Buying online is best, no direct human contact. Place the order with your initials instead of first name. Always read the return policy closely, some items like underwear won't be accepted back.
I remember trying to buy a bra for my wife. She told me what she wanted and that she hadn't packed it for a trip where I was to join her. At the store the clerks were whispering that I was probably buying it for me, so don't enlist help for that. When I bought one for me for halloween, I went to the WalMart self service lane--but had to throw it away any how because I couldn't figure out how to fill it to look half-way normal. Mine was just costume, but if yours was a keeper then you might give some thought to that part. I used my regular briefs, I can't imagine what to do with my, um, external equipment in panties so good luck there too. I did use a pair of my wife's panty hose and it seemed to scrunch things together okay for me there but it was uncomfortable by the end of my work shift. Just in case, the borrowed purse was a convenient something to hold in front of me, like that bag the scottish guys wear in front when they are in a kilt. I got a cheap wig, but there's stuff online that would be better for you and at not a lot of extra money than the costume trash. I just didn't because I decided on the costume too close to the date to get the online thing order delivered.
By and large, my little experience was largely a success, until I opened my mouth, I often passed until then and it was such a hoot to watch the expressions--but that is not your intention, I'm sure, so whatever you do for clothes, your voice is going to be the big thing and I can't help you there, pal. Good luck.

I like Nordstrom Rack. Big store, reasonable prices, nobody guarding the dressing rooms so you can try on women's clothing in peace. Large shoe selection too in sizes up to Women's 13 (about 11 1/2 mens).

I flow gown to get in the route of my female area, because i trust women anybody is way extra more beneficial to adult adult males. I crossdress so as that i will possibly sense only a fragment of a p.c., how awesome and the way fortunate a lady is. anyhow, my fable wud b if a attractive lady who's older than me, dragged me into her abode, and compelled me to placed on all of her used outfits, and gown me up like a slut. Then humiliate me infront of all my acquaintances. Then make me worship her pungent nylon coated ft, and her attractive ballet residences. She would then stress me to be her little puppy kitten, and gown me up like somewhat toddler, and cope with me like the lowly animal i'm. ultimately, she would question me to take out my cock, and giggle for ever and ever on how small and disgusting it really is. She would then attempt to make me *** as a lot as my wittle dickie can. Then i'd hav to lick all of it up, and she or he would start up to trample throughout me.

Do you have a female friend who you trust and is about your size? If so, have her try on the clothes for you....it may sound odd, but it is a suggestion.
Or, act like you are buying something for a female friend and have a female friend try it on if you don't trust anyone.
My ex-BF was a CD and we were the same size....he was real thin....so we swapped clothes many times....
