Actually, with ZIP, RAR, CAB and other compressed formats, you can download and send files, documents and images more quickly and easily. The problem is that they’re also confusing to work with, and many people find zipping and unzipping the files unnecessarily complicated. But it no longer has to be that way...

winzip and winrar r certain very useful softwares.. As u all know there r many files in our computer consumed lots of bytes.. Some of these files cannot be copied to a floppy disk if the size of the file exceeds 1.44 MB.. it even takes a long time to attach a file thrg i-net. So these softwares r installed and used to reduce the size of the file as much as possible.. Then we can carry out any operations on the file a bit more easily

Winrar like WinZip is used to compress files for storage and for sending as email attachments. Compressing reduces the size of the file but the file remains the same when uncompressed. Winrar compresses files in mulitple formats.
I prefer Winrar
Winrar is a very powerful tool that can handle large files. It can handle files as big as 850 billion gigabyte. Winrar allows you to create multiple files and self extracting files.
Winrar supports rar, zip, cab, lzh, tar, gz, ace, uue, bz2, jar, iso, 7z, and z formats.
Winrar can be downloaded from http://uk.search.yahoo.com/search?fr=ybr_bt&y=y&p=www.rarlab.comon (trial version).
If you run out of trial when the message comes up just press escape and you will be able to use winrar again.
Winrar is easy to install and use.

These are program used for compressing data.
There is also another data compressing program called WinAce.
WinZip (version 10) is the most widely used, winrar is the fastest and winace compresses files the most.
WinAce doesn't support ALL of the many different file types out there.
WinAce is FASTER than WinRAR.
WinAce is stable and FAST. I did a test of compressing the very same file using WinRAR first and then WinAce: WinRAR compressed the file in 25 minutes. WinAce compressed the file in 14 minutes. WinAce compressed the file 11 minutes FASTER than WinRAR.
WinAce offers decompression of the following file formats: ACE, ZIP, LHA, MS-CAB, RAR, ARC, ARJ, GZip, TAR, ZOO, JAR multi-volume (disk spanning) archives for ACE, ZIP, CAB
WinAce offers compression of the following formats: ACE, ZIP, LHA, MS-CAB, JAVA JAR
WinAce will let you do self-extracting archives (SFX) for ACE and ZIP

WinZip and WinRAR are compression programs they make files smaller and put them in an archive. You don't need them to decompress files if you have Windows ME/2K/XP, but you do need them to compress files.

they are both used to compress a large file, lets say that you wanted to send the installer for yahoo messenger to a friend it would take forever to simply send it as is, instead you have the option to compress it which basically in lamens terms squeezes all the files together like an over packed suitcase for easier travel over the net. those programs are simply used to unzip or extract the compressed files.
