jack did do a great job...the wife (whoever played her part) sincerely sucked in the movie....she was a much stronger character in the book...the bad thing about books turned movies is that unless the movie is about 5 hours long then the characters are completely under-developed....so the book was better, but the movie was still really well done

Yes, I have both read the book and seen the movie. I think it depends on which you do first. I saw the movie first, so when I read the book, I was seeing Jack Nicholson (looking uncannily like my own father) as the main character, also Jack, deteriorated into madness in the course of the book. Also, with the book, you wonder through most of it whether this is entirely in Jack's head, or if there really are ghosts. The movie makes it lean more toward there really being ghosts earlier in the story.

I think you have to take into account that the movie was different to the book. Both are good. I read the book after seeing the movie and i have to say that the book scared me more than the film (although the film did sh*t me up). However, they did make a mini series which was the book in live action format and to be honest i wasnt impressed with that as the casting wasnt right (imho) plus also it semed less scarey to see it rather than to imagine it - where as in the film itself they changed bits and pieces which made the film scarey in its own right. And i agree that Jack Nicholson was perfect for the part.

I think they were both great. It's one of the few King movies that's translated well to the screen. I think only Carrie ever really captured the book as well as "The Shining."
In "The Shining," you're right - Nicholson was the only guy (at the time) that could capture that role so well. And Shelly Duvall, while not my favorite actress, did a perfect, "What the [expleteive deleted]" look on her face. The whole movie was good and creepy!
Lots of people like "It," and "The Stand." I personally hated the production of "It," and while I thought "The Stand" was good, it was not anywhere near as good as the book.
I really want to see a movie done by Peter Jackson, the same way he did LOTR, based on "The Dark Tower" series. I can see Gabriel Byrne as Roland sooooo clearly. I think PJ is the one guy in Hollyweird that could take that amazing series by King and turn it into one helluva flick.

I have read most of Stephen King's books & do usually find books are better than films. In this instance i thought Jack was soooooo perfect for the role, which made a nice change as the film makers so often get this very wrong.

I am a great fan of both, Steven King, and Jack nicholson. I believe the book was much better of course. The animals in the maze really frecked me out. Nobody, I mean NOBODY, but Jack could have played the part. I love to watch him and think, man that was just words on a page when he read them. He then turned them into life!!!! Bravo!!!

There are 2 movies, the Steven King version and the Stanley Kubrick version - the Steven King version obviously translates the book more truthfully, but it was missing Jack who was fabulous in the original.
The book is one of his best (but Carrie still tops it for me) and if there is anyone out there who hasn't picked up a Steven King novel read this one first, especially if you've seen the movie!!

i watched the movie. Normally I don't watch that kind of film as they give me nightmares. We taped the film once and watched it the next morning. I was so scared, and so glad I wasn't watching it late in the evening - I didn't get nightmares, thank goodness.
Even thinking about it to answer your questions brings back some of the vivid scenes, like the flow of blood comming down the corridor, or that maze that he eventually died of cold in, or that dreadful 'all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy' that he typed and typed, and that dreadful moment when his wife discovered it.
Scary! I don't think I could read the book
