everyone that has/had one just seems to say how weak they are and ive had a dirt devil that was absolutely useless - no suction at all. im probably talking about a mains one, rechargeable are the worst for poor suction. i need mine for the car but also in my flat for small cleaning jobs. anyone out there happy with theirs??

I just LOVE my Shark. It has all the suction you could ever want, it's lite weight, has a great shoulder strap and an extra long electrical cord. I use it just about everywhere.
Here's their web site

Excellent question.. I need one badly.. I have had dirt devil and two others.. forgot their names and none were any good.... I would love to have some company come up with a great one but at this time, I have not found one... Be careful when YOU buy one because they may look nice and the readings about it may sound nice but keep the receipt and return it when it proves to be worthless... better yet.. try to use it in the store to measure its suction power before you buy it.

I had a dustbuster for a long time (more than 1) and was always frustrated with the short battery life before you needed to recharge.
Then I got the Oreck. It lasts much longer than the less expensive handhelds. It comes with a full size handle for cleaning like an upright and it pops out for be a little dustbuster as well.

The Shark is good and the Dyson (although I don't think they make a handheld) is VERY expensive. The key to any good vacuum is the hepa filter. If you are sucking dust into one end of the vacuum, but dust is blowing out the back end, the thing is useless....Make sure to get a handheld with the Hepa filter.

The shark is very good. Black and Decker is lousy as is dirt devil. My favorite vacuum of all has been roomba - not handheld, and not for the car, but the best little worker.

I have a Riccar. I LOVE it -- my mom does and her cleaning lady liked it so well she went and got one. You will have to get it from a vacuum shop -- they are not sold in department stores. But it is a great vacuum!!
