Hi-I have a betta fish since this spring. I live in the North east, and it is starting to get cold here. Currently, my betta is in a tank with no heater. He has been doing fine all summer, but I am starting to wonder how he will do this winter.

Should I buy a tank with a heater for him for the winter or will he be alright without one?

I live in the north east too, I have my betta in a 5.5 gallon tank and around a week ago I put his 25 watt heater in his tank. As long as your bettas tank temp never gets below 70, during the day or night then I think he is fine. If he starts to get a little sluggish though then I would get him a heater, some bettas like warmer water and don't handle the cooler water well.

Just a little tip to those that said no cause theirs don't need one. Bettas are tropical and need warm water and just because a betta can live without one doesn't mean it can thrive without one.

I'd get a heater. During that fad where people were getting those beta plants, you know the vase with water and the plant with the roots exposed in the vase. I went through 3 fish during the winter. It was given to me as a X-mas gift. My home is in the low 70's when I'm home but when I'm not home it's near 65. Which made the water TOO cold and kept killing the poor things. I don't keep fish anymore:(

No you do not need a heated tank for a betta fish in the winter. it can get very cold here in the winters and my daughter had 2 betta fish that lived for 3 1/2 years in the little tiny tank that we bought for them at wal-mart. These are the easiest fish ever to have. and very pretty to watch also

Bettas survive in the 75-86°F range. Buy a thermometer and keep and eye on the temp. You may at most have to put him on a higher shelf, but he should be fine. Here is a mini-heater if you need one

He should be fine without a heater as long as he isn't sitting in a window or near a draft. You probably won't be able to get a heater small enough for his bowl anyway (he'd end up frying). Also, don't place him directly over a heating vent as he will get too hot.

Most Betta's I've seen get along very well without. I'm not a fish guy though.

Living in temps under 75 will shorten his life span, but he will survive gradual changes in temp in to the 60s. Personally I think you should get a 2.5-gallon tank with a 25 wat heater.

If you keep it indoors, it should done just fine. It might get a little sluggish, but if you heat your house to a typical 60-65 degrees, it won't have a problem.
