Also, I am sure that children are not taught anything as complicated as the explanations below. So what are children taught in school. I am sure that I was told Feb-Apr (spring), may-july (summer), aug-oct (autumn) nov-jan (winter).

Typically it is done as follows:

Winter: DEC-FEB
Spring: MAR-MAY
Summer: JUN-AUG
Autmun: SEP-NOV

Yet that is really more so something we would like to have rather than what really exists - as I explain here:

I.e., the reason for the seasons is astronomy, but weather behaves differently - is much more variable and there are abrupt changes from winterlike to summerlike weather - especially toward the poles. In the tropics, the notion of seasons is to a large extent non-existent - temperatures remain similar all year round, and there are dry and wet seasons.

There's a difference between the meterological seasons and the astronomical seasons.

Weather forecasters use what they call meterological seasons. Each of these is a three-month period, beginning on the first of the month:

Winter -- December - February
Spring -- March - May
Summer -- June - August
Fall -- September - November

The astronomical seasons focus on the solstices and equinoxes.
In the northern hemisphere, the winter solstice occurs around December 20-23. It is the day with the fewest hours of daylight. The summer solstice, around June 20-23, has the most daylight.

The spring and fall equinoxes fall in between, around March 20-23 and September 20-23. On these days, the amounts of daylight and darkness are roughly equal.

These seasons are reversed in the southern hemisphere.

Three months each.

The actual dates to mark the changing of the seasons come from the two days during the year when the number of daylight hours and nighttime hours are the same (the Equinoxes) and the longest day and shortest day of the year (in terms if daylight hours).

The Vernal Equinox (first day of Spring) in 2007 will be March 20, the Autumnal Equinox (first day of Autumn) will be September 23. Summer Solstice (first day of Summer) is June 21, 2007 and Winter Solstice (first day of Winter) is December 22.

Many people mentally move these dates forward a week or two to give Spring as April, May and June; Summer as July August and September; Fall as October, November and December and Winter as January, February and March.

I live in Scandinavia, and this is how the year is divided here:
December, January, and February are winter months, March, April, and May are spring months, June, July, and August summer months, and September, October, and November autumn months.

In Italy they have dates when each season starts but in England I think its much more relaxed. Here are the dates anyway:

25 December - 24 March : Winter
25 March - 24 June : Spring
25 June - 24 September : Summer
25 September - 24 December : Autumn

So according to that today would be the 1st day of autumn!

The Equinoxes are on or about March 21 and September 21, the Solstices are on or about June 21 and December 21.

In the Northern Hemisphere that corresponds to:
March 21: start of Spring
June 21: start of Summer
Sept. 21: start of Autumn
Dec. 21: start of Winter

Somebody decided to create seasons of the year, because we relate to weather conditions. To provide four sections in a year gives us more expectations of what the british weather will be like.
