First of all, what color is the suit? You should not be wearing black and blue if the suit is brown, gray, or any other shade than black. The shirt and tie should be the focus of a well-blended look.
My personal style preference is that striped and patterned shirts don't look as formal as solid colors. For a ball, and if it was up to me, I would tell you black suit or a tuxedo, white shirt, basic solid color tie, black shoes. Traditional is always a great look, and it's safe, no chance of looking awkward. Honestly though, a tuxedo would be a better choice here. If you choose a colored shirt, then the tie should blend well with it. Try a boxed shirt and tie set that are pre-coordinated for you. Too much color looks tacky at a formal function.
My favorite modern look:
Tuxedo/Black suit in the style that best suits you.
Banded collar dress non-pleated shirt with a coordinating button cover on the top button.

It's such a sophisticated look with clean lines, it won't be over the top or underdressed. And it's an easy style to wear for most men.
Good luck and have fun!

Well Max, first of all if the striping is subtle there is no problem wearing both a pin stripe suit and a pin stripe shirt, however adding a striped tie might be a little overboard. Of course you might get away with a striped bow tie as that won't be as full bodied and will stand out in front of your collar instead of lying flat down your shirt front - if you have the passion and the confidence to wear a bow tie of course - it's an acquired taste and not everyone will love it and some people will let you know they do or don't. A paisley tie, neck or bow, would work quite nicely - the black and silver sound good - also I would recommend a french cuff shirt with some cuff links for that added bit of style. Try a few different looks and choose whichever you are most happy with.

I say go with the plain suit a nice one solid color dress shirt.Like light blue or dark blue or white dress shirt and a nice one solid color tie.If you wear a light blue shirt either wear a dark nice blue tie or a nice black tie.If you wear a dark blue dress shirt wear a black tie or a light blue tie and if you wear a white shirt well black and white go with everything pick a nice tie that you like.Really no matter what you wear as long as you are a beautiful person on the inside she will see a beautiful person on the outside.Good luck with your lady friend heehee

what color is the suit??? black i assume. i always try to make the tie the center piece of the look. teis allow for more patterns and color variants as they are accent pieces and not large parts of the suit. therefore, you are given an unlimited number of options. i would paly down the shirt, blue is ok, but maybe no pinstripes, and get a GOOD tie. Now, nothing with christmas lights, or muppets or anything tacky like that. go to a department store and browse their tie selections and pick 2 or 3 that really pop against the suit and shirt. this way, you'll stand out, but you'll also be subtle.

What kind of blue striped shirt, light blue, french blue, with white stripes, black stripes?
What colour suit?
I would generally advise you to stay away from solid black ties on coloured shirts, but it can work in some situations. We really need to see a picture to give you any meaningful advice.

It depends what combo of blue stripes are on ur shirt, and what color ur suit is...
Go bold, though, and wear a solid bright blue tie to match ur shirt instead of a bland black one

tip: shirt and tie should match; since this is for a ball that will give more of a formal and sleek look; also stick w/ a dark suit
