The original song was wirtten in 1954 by Eddie Miller of Eddie Millede and the Oaklahomans. He got the idea one nigh after hearing a couple arguing about a divorce near the bandstand where the woman said' "If you'd release me, we wouldn't ahve any problems, and everything would be all right. The remard stayed with Miller, becasue "release me" seemed a softer way of saying "divorce", a term he had always considered a "dirty word" in a song. The song was first released that same year by Jimmy Heap. It was Ray Price's version released a few years later that brought the song it's original popularity. In 1967 the recording of the song by Engelbery Humperdink launched his singing career.

Englebert Humperdink made that song way back in the sixties. I don't think it was a remake at that time, but could have been. I was just a little kid at the time, but it was my mothers favorite song and he was her favorite singer.
