Why the different name for the same piece of clothing?

The direct female equivalent of a shirt is a blouse. The word "top" can imply absolutely anything worn on the upper half of the body, from a t-shirt, a polo shirt, a strappy party top, a sweat shirt, or anything.

it depends, you can get woman's shirts which have no shape but you also get blouses which do have a more fitted shape to them. A top however I would say does not have buttons
