Actually, I think it's the gathering instinct. Men are typically considered the hunters. They like to go out, seek out a target, and make the kill. The women are the gatherers. They are programmed to search for berries, roots, and other treasures and to bring them back to the den. That is why men get impatient with women and go hang out in the tool section of the store... stalking their next purchase. Women, meanwhile, go about their business... looking through racks of clothes and searching the sales aisles while they collect bags of treasures to bring back to the den.

This Wikipedia link may help, but doesn't much talk about the theory that women were the gatherers while men were the hunters. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hunter_gatherer Personally, I think the reason women were the gatherers is that they needed to regard the safety of the children that were likely in their immediate care.

There is a belief that much of behavior is driven by the 'investment' involved in having children. Men have a relatively light investment in having children. They deposit their sperm and are done. (Social issues and mores as side). On the other hand, women have a heavy investment, they must carry the child, essentially requiring a year of their lives for a child.

The theory goes on to state that because of this, men tend to be attracted to young and attractive women (factors that correlate to fertility). Women on the other hand, are generally attracted to men who are financially stable or are good providers(able to support them and the child). This also accounts for why men seem want sex more then women, women must be choosier in their mates. Modern social ideology aside, this idea actually has a lot of support from research of both human and animal behavior.

So, why do women shop? Two possible reasons. First, they are aware of men's tendency to go for attractive women, so they are constantly trying to up that attractiveness by buying clothes, makeup, etc. And second, spending money satisfies their own urges regarding having means to provide for their children.

Psychological maybe, but biological...highly unlikely. Biological suggests that there are other creatures on this planet that display the same trait. The bartering of currency for goods is a purely human trait, a result of highly organized social structures.

I don't think there are any biological reasons for it, I think it's more of a cultural thing.

And by the way, not all women love shopping.

Women like the feeling of control of purchasing: being able to make a decision and act on it.

Clothes shopping stimulates them emotionally: each colour and style they try on makes them feel a bit different.

Biologically, women are nest builders, securing the decorative things to furnish a home with, so that it becomes a stable and attractive place to raise offspring.
