Although each character has great qualities, I would have to pick Samwise Gamgee. He is an unassuming, quiet gardener who shows incredible courage, and the ability to keep a level head in a crisis.
However, the Lord of the Rings trilogy is as great as it is because all of the characters (good and evil) are so well rounded. Can you even imagine the stories without Gollum? Gandalf? Sauron? Bilbo? Frodo? Legolas? Gimli? Eowyn? Aragorn? or any of the others???? Tolkien created an entire world of peoples that are all, down to the last hobbit, required to make the stories great, and Peter Jackson and his team took those stories and made them come alive for millions!
So even though I picked Sam as my favorite, I have to say that every character, down to the ugliest troll, had a part in why the books and movies are just about my favorites of all time.

Aragorn. Of all the characters I think he had the most to loose if they failed to destroy the Dark Lord. Not only would he loose the love of his life, but he would loose himself...he spent his whole life turning from what he was destined to be because he thought he was weak. And yet he was the strongest among them all. I also really liked Legolas and Gandolf as well as Theoden King.

LEGOLAS without doubt.His shooting is breathtaking.
Orlando Bloom has made the character even more endearing.

Male:
Boromir.
a strong guy but so tempted to take the ring. finally realized his error and lust for power and did the right thing, honor wins over everything everytime, though the ending may not be so happy.
it was still honorable for him.
female.
Eowyn- strength beyond imagination, a fool's hope for love, (Aragorn) in the book she finally finds it. doesnt take any crapola from anyone though.

Love the book -- hate the film.
I even like the cartoon film better, and that was bad enough.

i like GANDALF the grey (and also when he became Gandalf the White)
He has such cool magical powers, and he's very wise, and always knows what to do next!
Gimlie the dwarf is also cool coz he's funny
