You weren't really specific about what you wanted to use the laptop for so I'll guess that it will be running office applications and playing the odd movie and listening to music & using the internet.
Depending on your budget I'd say it's best to go for one with at least a 40Gb Hard Disk. Bear in mind the average iPod is 30Gb these days and your windows installation with MS Office and the usual basics will take up another 4Gb or so. 40-60Gb should give you a reasonable amount of space to store music/video's from your iPod etc. Memory wise (RAM) 512Mb is a happy medium for a laptop. 1024Mb would be great but sometimes works out expensive. Don't go below 256Mb as this is the minimum recommended to run Windows XP.
It might be also quite useful to get a Laptop with a Centrino Processor. These have the ability to connect to the Internet Wirelessly. Alternately look for 802.11 being mentioned somewhere in the spec as this will do much the same. Dell are doing some good deals on Duo Core based laptops which are the latest model from Intel but anything barring a celeron should be fine for office work watching DVD's and playing simple games.
Celerons are really meant for entry level laptops which will be surfing the internet and running basic office applications. They aren't the best solution for multimedia.
Screen wise 15 inch screens offer the best compromise between ease of viewing and weight. It really depends on what you want the laptop for as to whether you go for something bigger/smaller.
The previous poster provided you with some good starting points for reliable brands.

When you buy a computer, you have to consider very carefully what you want to use it for. Laptops are always more expensive and they aren't as comfortable to use. I would only buy one if portability will be an issue on a regular basis; that is are you going to need to carry it around every week or every fortnight? MAC's tend to be a lot more user friendly for absolute beginners but again they are really expensive to repair or upgrade.
If you have any experience with Windows or MACOS then stick with what you know.
If you don't have any friends/family who will help you get to know how to use it, I would budget for the expensive help lines, otherwise you would need to do quite a bit of research on the internet or in the library which will be a bit of a headache for someone who doesn't relate too well with computers in general.
For processor speed and memory, don't go mad unless you want a gaming machine. If you want a gaming machine you would probably be better off economically and technically with a games console.
Otherwise, for general office features and internet access go to a computer shop on the high street and get an entry level machine, and if you can get them to deliver and set it up, it would be a worthwhile investment.

Rock laptops are very popular if you are looking for a decent one with plenty of memory, a fast processor, and a fast graphics card within budget.

If you are "quite stupid" as you say, what makes you think you should even be using a computer? Sorry, I just had to ask.
Search the internet for Laptop deals.

Get a mac! They are so much better than a pc. You can customize them to add more memory. They will not get a virus or crash and you can run windows on them.
If you must get a pc try a voodoo pc
