a lunar eclipse occurs when the sun/moon/earth are in exact alignment. the moon rotates (orbits) around the earth while the earth rotates (orbits) around the sun. when the moon (in it's orbit around earth) lines up "exactly" between the earth and the sun it blocks out the sun from view. there are eclipse's that occur in different parts of the earth while the rest of the earth is eclipse free. this occurs because both the moon and the earth are in constant motion around the sun. this is the reason scientist can calculate exactly when eclipse's will occur and exactly what part of earth will be affected-theoretically, for thousands of years in advance
