This is an indicator that either your alternator or battery is failing!

Once the engine starts, the alternator on your car is supposed to generate all of the electricity that the car needs. That includes charging the battery.

If the voltage light come on, at any time after the engine is running, it means that something is preventing the alternator from doing its job. That means that the car is temporarily using power from the battery. Ultimately you are going to be without enough power to start the car.

The problem could be as simple as a loose contact, or a slippery "serpentine belt", or as expensive as a new alternator. Go to a mechanic whom you trust, now.

the light will activate whenever the system is not producing the needed output
usually about 13.8 volts or more when at idle
your system is not running to full capacity
when voltage drops to a point where the system has to draw from the battery the light will come on

That light is telling you your charging system is failing! You need to take the alternator off and go to your local parts store where they will check it for free. If that is the problem, just replace it.
