To improve your singing potential you should start with improving your breathing. At the end of a song, you should be slightly out of breath. Make sure each breath is taken from your diaphragm, and not from your throat. It will give you more power to push through long notes and will make your overall sound much better. A good way to see how to breathe from your diaphragm is to lay down (preferably on the ground or somewhere flat) and take big deep breaths. If you look down at your stomach, you should see the area right below your chest and above your belly filling with air during each breath. When you do any kind of breathing excersizes--which can be as simple as taking a big breath in through your nose and out through your mouth--make sure that your breath is coming from the diaphragm.
Another way to improve your singing potential is your diction. Mostly it's not the tune of the exersize that matters in this case, but the words... Saying "three blind mice are making midnight music in the moonlight--mighty nice" as fast as you can while still saying it clearly, will help your diction. Make sure you pronounce your "T's."
Also, you will probably not sound very "cool," because a warmup is meant to get your vocal chords going and your breathing correct, so if you are easily embarrassed do it in a group or somewhere discreet.

Stand up, chest out and sing scales - just as they do in the films. Also drink plenty of water and get lots of fresh air.
