I know the basics but what happens when you click thumbs up for good answer.........not necessary best answer??

Giving thumbs up doesn't get you any points, or the person that answered the question. It is used to help people find a best answer. When you pick a best answer, that person gets 10 points.

We, the Answerers, can give you, the Asker, our opinion on which answer is most suited to your question. If an answer has 10 Thumbs Down, for example, it would behoove you to disregard that answer.

the pic changes to a thumb pointing up and if you pic a thumbs down the answer disappears so you dont have to look at that stupid thing any more..

You can scan other people's questions as well and award a thumbs up/down without anyone getting anything - you are just showing your approval (or lack of).
