Well that is the big question. It can't go on and on, because nothing does that. But neither can it end, because there is always something past the end. So either way you think of it, it makes no sense. I prefer to think of it as going on and on forever.
Now some people may say that space is finite but with no edge because it is curved in a higher dimension, like the two dimensional surface of the Earth is finite but has no edge since it is curved in the third dimension. But that begs the question of whether that higher dimension has an end or not, doesn't it?

We're so locked into our understanding of physics that we find it difficult to comprehend other things.
According to the "big guys in the white coats", the universe does not have an ending. Difficult to understand because you are trying to apply your knowledge of your world to it.
"Space?" is a pretty big question and I doubt if you'll get a proper answer from bored office staff wasting a bit of time in Yahoo Answers
Just tell yourself its down to the "Doonrea Principle of Matter Diversification". You don't need to know what that it, just accept it's the reason why the universe doesn't have an edge.

Get the Yellow Pages...You need an astrophysicist...but in answer to your question...another question. Why should space come to an end?
In time the stars and galaxies will 'come to an end' - as their energy runs out - the universe will still be infinite - but be totally black and lifeless...
If the/our universe is infinite in size - it doesn't even take into account the theory of the 11-dimensional 'multiverse'...i.e Parallel universes...how infinite/finite are they..if they exist...
PS If any of you are an astrophysicist...I apologise if this is complete drivel..

good question ... id say it keeps on going cos they say space is infinate as the universe is always expanding, if space was "finite" what wud happen wen it reached the edge? one hell of a squeeze tbh
the best theroy ive seen is the big bang being followed by a "big Crunch" in which the universe which has been expanding for trillions of years suddenly stops, and sucks back in on itself causing a big crunch, some scintists say that this may have already happened, or may continue going on indifinitly
as to ur last question ... i dont have a clue ...

When you reach the end of the universe, there's a small tanning salon run by a 40-year old ex-bass guitarist called Sue. She charges ten bucks an hour, but for that, you get a free sandwich thrown in.

We can only think in three dimensions, and most of us only move in two (except when going up stairs or in a lift). There's probably a lot more to the universe than even our wildest imagination could ponder.

well, if you know astronomy you would know that the Universe is constantly expanding, almost as fast as the speed of light, Galaxies are becoming farther and farther from us
outside space should be more space, just without planets or stars, just blackness..
