Beacause some people are incapable of treating the opposite sex as anything other than a date or potential date. They go from their own experiences and assume everyone else is like them and has those same experiences. I have a best friend who is a guy and has been my best friend for 8 years. I have never even considered him to be anything more. He has a fiancee and its all great. I have a lot of guy friends. I think it depends a lot of the people, circumstances, and how you were raised. If you are a guy who had a lot of sisters or a girl with brothers you may be more comfortable with the opposite sex than other people. Or perhaps they are incapable of seeing them as friends because they are so desperate to find a boy/girl friend that they can't look at anyone as more than that. Personally, I think the people who think that you can't be friends with the opposite sex are really missing out on some great friendships.

It is true that in a lot of cases one of the two will develop feelings or start being jealous or try to take more space or... well basically in most cases you cannot avoid the fact that you are not of the same sex. Then again, I have male friends that I truly believe are only friends, so yes I think it is possible, just sometimes complicated.

Their immature sexuality stands in the way. They cannot believe a man could be friends with a girl, or a girl with a man without one or both wishing to jump into bed and thus ruin the friendship.
Of course men and women can easily be friends in a brotherly or sisterly way....especially if sexual attraction is NOT part of the relationship.
The people who cannot believe this are people who have never experienced a sexless good relationship with the opposite sex, what a shame!
Many of my friends are female and I love them as much as sisters and I know they love me as their brother!
Keep seeking friends, of all sexes!

People who have sex on the brain usually answer this way!
I have quite a few male fiends who have proved to be totally loyal and caring friends over many years.. With no sexual activity going on at all..
Friendship is a precious and wonderful thing..something that lasts longer than most 'sexual' relationships so its worth investing in

In a lot of cases men and women who are "just friends" tend to date some time in their relationship specially the ones who bond together really well. There for its said men and woman cant be "just friends". Wich i totaly disagree with i have had many male friends that were just that FRIENDS it never even crossed my mind to date them.
There is one case in my life that i regret till this day though..A male friend and i were always "just friends" and I told myself and everyone else that all the time..a few years later he started dating a girl and i seen less and less of him i truely missed being with him all the time and found myself feeling empty when he wasnt around..by time i realised my true feelings for him it was to late he was engaged to this girl and he couldnt just leave her because i finally realised how i felt about him as he put it " you should have told me a long time ago and things would have been different".
Maybe thats why men and women who are "just friends" attempt to date just incase it was meant to be?

i think people that say that are overly judgmental and have never had the privilege of just being friends with a member of the opposite sex.
that comes from a sexist viewpoint and a sexist view is a very ugly view.....you will better off in life if you stand up for your beliefs and do not let other people dictate your personal views on friendships.

That is rubbish, I have a male friend that I have known since I was 7 years old, I am now almost 50, he is just a great mate and more like brother to me than my own brothers, I have no sexual feelings for him whatsoever, he is just a good friend and anyone who says it is not possible isn't in touch with their own emotions.

Platonic relationships are really hard to come by between a male and female in this day and age-but they do happen-just not very often.

Because people say all kinds of things. Some are true and others aren't. You decide for yourself. It's why we have a brain.
