it means one of two things you either dont have the right program on your pc to open that file or it may have been created a by a program that you dont have but is compatible with one you do.
like if it was made with word perfect and you have ms word you would have to associate that file with ms word to be able to view it. the way you do that is right click the file you want to open choose open with then you will get a list of programs and if you know the the type of program that should open the file click on it. if you dont know you can try them all till one works. if none work you shouls ask the person you got the file from what program created it. good luck

when you receive a file, windows usuall AUTOMATICALLY associates a program to that kinda file (for example, files that are pictures (whether they are in .jpeg , .bmp or any other picture formats are automatically associated with a picture viewing program
