Download AVG from http://free.grisoft.com , remove Norton and install AVG. Not only is it free but your machine will suddenly be noticably faster. You can't schedule an automatic scan for connecting / disconnecting from the internet but the on-access scanner is running all the time so you don't need to.

You can directly update your antivirus online and it is for free. Just select the option Live update from the main screen of Norton Antivirus

Try the AVG from Grisoft.com. I have using this for last two years without any problem.

But connecting to intenet has other problem serious than a virus threat. This is from spyware. They can really kill you --- hijack your pc and your password. SO it is more important to keep them at bay. For this use AD-aware SE from Lavasoftusa.com.
