Although I think that you shouldn't let your wieght keep you from wearing dresses, there are many styles of pants that can be glamorous when paired with the right top. Try Deb, they have some great styles in the Junior's Plus section that you could dress up for the night without having to wear a dress.
My style suggestions are flyaway pants, or a flowing wider leg to drape and move with you, not against you. Look for styles with chiffon or other light fabric overlays. Then pair the pants up with a great top or blouse. Something colorful or ornamental to draw the eye up towards your face. Seperates are great, you can mix and match to best suit your figure.

Then your guy friend needs to be in a suit. If he doesn't have one, and he doesn't want to buy one, then tell him to wear dress slacks with a fashion dress shirt, i.e. non-traditional color/neckline. He can dress it up with men's "jewelry", i.e. cufflinks, button covers, tie tacks, or a tie bar if he wants to add some sparkle to his outfit. Examples:

HL, i agreed with bizquit. buy some magazine and look at how the stars dress on red carpet.

if u are big, it doesnt mean u have to hide everything. show off what u are proud of. I sugg wear a tube or sexy top and a fitted jacket or a oversize off shoulder top but with a bit of details since its night of glitz & glamour , pants (fitted , not loose and baggy) and a pair of heels with open toes (quite in lately), wear a bangle (those thick plastic type) wear your hair up and yr fringe pin up and carry a small hang bag. check out top shop, zara , marks & spencer or dorothy pekins.

Okay, you've got a little extra curve and the theme is "Glitz&Glamour"... alright, here's what I suggest:

1. The bottom: wear high waist pants. Definitely. I don't care if the material is denim, cotton, curduroy, whatever. It's got to be high waist to fit your current weight status. Low waist will just accentuate your extra kilos, while regular or high waist will straighten you up.

2. The top(s): turtlenecks, turtlenecks, turtlenecks! Go for a bold colored, long, 3/4 or sleeveless turtleneck top. It will elongate your neck, widen your shoulders and thus making you appear elegantly slimmer. Make sure the material you pick this top in is firm yet elastic; something to hold you up but still comfort you. The alternative would have to be a black v-neck sweater. Really. I've seen seen plus size gals-- including actress Queen Latifah-- wear v-necks. They really fit + size girls due to the narrowing-down effect it gives.

3. For an extra layer (in chilly weather) : a short jacket-- denim, cotton or curduroy. This will also elongate your size; shorter torso, longer legs!

4. For shoes: just boots. Pointy (but not too pointy to be comfortable) ankle/mid-calf-length, jet black/dark brown/deep violet leather ones with a thin but again, not too thin, heel. Or just any material or color you want, of course!

5. For accesories: have some soft colored accesories, on the contrary, to soften and lighten up your look. Maybe pastel pinks and lavender will do. Anyway, try a 100% polyester made or knitted newsboy hat/beret (they're quite similar), a long 100% acrylic made scarf (wrap around your neck not too tight-- rather casually and elegantly) and fine (thin) jewelery. Preferably in silver to go with the overall bold colors you'll most likely be wearing.

6. For hair & makeup: (contact me with a brief description of yourself and a nearly immediate reply will be sent back)

7. For your guy friend: nice-fitted jeans, a white blouse and black leather jacket. Black and nicely polished office shoes and hair gelled or well-combed back. Anything clean and casual with a touch of chic for him. Sorry, that's all I can think up for him...

Extra tips:

- Wear bold/neutral colors.
- Try going for vertical striped clothes.
- Do NOT wear any floral-printed clothes!! Go NEUTRAL.
- Try single-colored outfits: it can be make you look taller and thus slimmer. Or colors that blend; at least somewhat match.
- Do NOT wear anything too tight, too bulky or bold. I've suggested bold, but don't do so for makeup for example!! Unless you've got the proper complexion that is...

Anyway, I really hope this helped, good luck and have a fun night both of you (you & your guy) !! =)

*EDIT* P.S. Sorry, your email address doesn't work! It says it "hasn't been confirmed yet". I have a reply ready for you, but I just can't actually send it....

You don't need to wear a dress to look glamorous. Go for a nice straight-cut pants with a trendy top. You could do up your hair for a glamorous look if you are conscious about your figure.
