Take 888 (largest combination of 8's, smaller than 1000) and add 88 to it to get 976.

So you have used 5 8's and need 3 more. There is still a difference of 24 to take care of. But 8 x 3 = 24. Hence this is how we get 1000 from the 3 single 8's added to 976.

((88-8)/8)^(88/8-8) = (80/8)^(11-8) = 10^3 (10 raised 3) = 1000
