My jeep cherokee 89 needs more horse power what can i do?

I have a 89 automatic jeep cherokee and i need ways to increase the horsepower cause i want to beat my friends jeep he has a 96 jeep cherokee automatic but he has upgraded his.... im not realy great or smart about car stuff so i need a lot of help

put an 8 cylinder engine (or a bigger 8 cylinder) in. Or just give it a tune- up. changing the spark plugs, wires, etc. cleaning the engine heads, changing the oil, and putting in a new air filter.
