There could be several possible factors that are causing moss to grow in your yard;
1) Excessive shade
2) Low pH of your soil
3) Compacted soil
IF you can perform some of the following preventative measures, I'm sure you'll eliminate a good portion of your existing algae and their re-occurence...
For excessive shade problems; Trim the trees and bushes in the immediate area to increase the sunlight and airflow so the soil will have a chance to dry out properly.
For soils with a low pH; Try applying some lime to raise the pH. The standard rule of thumb is about a pound per 1,000 square but to be more accurate, I'd recommend purchasing a pH test kit or send a sample of your soil to your local extension agency.
For soils that are compacted; I'd recommend using a roto-tiller or an aerator to break up your soil and mixing in some compost to help keep your soil more pliable/soft.
Before you begin the previous suggestions, you should use something to eliminate the existing algae.
"Safer® Brand Moss and Algae Killer" AND
"BOSS MAX" are a couple of products that contain Pottasium salts which can be used safely on lawns to eliminate algae.
Products that contain Iron Sulfate will also help eliminate infestations of moss in your yard and help green-up plants/turf but the downside to their use is that Iron sulfate stains concrete and lawn furniture so use them carefully.
Hope this information was of some help to you. GOOD LUCK!

I have the same problem. Annually I scrub the yard with jeyes fluid and boiling water. This is labour intensive but will help to kill the moss. After a week or so I'll powerwash it. Jeyes fluid unfortunately will not stop it coming back forever but will slow it down.

Do you mean on ground or pavement? If on the gound, you have a low Ph and need to apply Dolomite lime.
Jeys Fluid is NASTY stuff. Have you read the label??? It proffesses to be a "killer" for everything.... insects, plants and now moss?!@$ And, it smells REALLY BAD!!!! Bleach works well on stones to kill the moss spores. But nothing is forever.

It sounds like you have too many trees in the yard and the grass isn't getting enough sun. If you trim the trees back a little that would help.
